Arizona State baseball couldn’t hold a four-run, first-inning lead Sunday, committed four errors, walked nine UCLA batters and managed just two hits from the second through seventh innings.
Still, the No. 16 Sun Devils had enough resilience to score three runs in the eighth for an 8-7 win over No. 1 UCLA at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
“We played realistically a very, very poor game on the mound and defensively,” ASU coach Tracy Smith said. “This group still found a way to win against the No. 1 team in the country. That shows you how good this team could be if we can get some of those things taken care of on a consistent basis.
