Once he completes his ESPN duties Friday, new Arizona State coach Herm Edwards plans to start recruiting. With college football's early signing period just two weeks away, this is an important time, but before he leaves campus Edwards will have to complete an important task.
Certification.
Per NCAA bylaw 11.5.1, only those coaches who have been certified may contact or evaluate prospective student-athletes off campus. This means Edwards – a former NFL head coach who hasn’t coached in college in nearly three decades -- can’t do any in-home visits during this contact period until he passes a 30-question exam.
