TEMPE, Ariz. – After capturing two First-Team All-American honors just a week ago at the NCAA Indoor Championships, redshirt junior Maggie Ewen broke the American collegiate record in the hammer throw with a whopping toss of 72.81m (238-6) on Friday at the Baldy Castillo Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium. The throw also broke the Pac-12 and ASU record, which she set herself less than a year ago in May 2016.
To clarify the difference in transition from the weight throw in the indoor season to the hammer throw in the outdoor season, Ewen had to transition from tossing a 20-pound ball with a shorter handle to heaving a nine-pound ball with a long, narrow steel wire.
