Erik Tolman has been effective as pitcher and as a hitter in his freshman season at Arizona State.
On Tuesday night, Tolman did both as a two-way starter for the first time, throwing 4 1/3 innings and hitting a home run in a 9-2 win over UNLV at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
That’s the first time an ASU starting pitcher also homered since Matt Newman in the final game of the 2008 season, an ill-fated, 12-9 loss to Fresno State in an NCAA super regional finale.
