Having lost to rival Stanford for a sixth straight season, Cal must now refocus on a Pac-12 Conference opponent it does not know nearly so well.
"I was thinking on defense we just need to make a couple crucial stops and play assignment-sound football," Cal safety Stefan McClure said. "Stanford, they run their offense. It's just, `Can you stop us?' "
And Cal could not.
"We played very hard, we just didn't play well enough to win," Dykes said.
Quarterback Jared Goff passed for 386 yards — the most allowed by Stanford in 44 games dating back to 2012.
