California softball broke open a 1-0 game with a five-run fifth inning Saturday for a 8-3 win over Arizona State.
Makena Smith hit a two-run homer in the fifth for the Bears off ASU starting pitcher Samantha Mejia (13-9).
ASU scored in the sixth on a two-out solo homer by Jade Gortarez and added a pair of runs in the seventh.
The Sun Devils fall to 29-18, 9-11 with their four-game win streak ending. Cal is 28-26, 5-17. The series finale, on Senior Day, is at noon Sunday at Farrington Stadium.
