There was déjà vu and a bittersweet feeling to Arizona State’s baseball loss Sunday.
The Sun Devils fell behind by five runs in the rubber game of a series against Washington in part because of defensive mistakes, a common thread all season.
Then Boyd Vander Kooi came in to pitch for the first time since March 24, throwing in the low 90s with three strikeouts in two innings. The freshman right-hander showed what ASU has been missing on the mound in his absence and with a lack of pitching depth.
“You know what you’re looking at is probably a bona fide Friday starter,” ASU coach Tracy Smith said.
