It's early summer 2005.
Arizona State baseball is back at the College World Series for the first time in seven years, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the school's first national championship in any sport. Bobby Winkles is on the phone, taking a break from repairing the sprinkler system at his home in La Quinta, Calif., to reminisce about his 1965 Sun Devils.
"I'm so old, my appointment book is not that full," jokes Winkles, then 75 and still playing golf five days a week. "I can still converse halfway correct."
Winkles is charming and disarming.
