Signature win? Forget that.
After four consecutive losses that put its bowl eligibility, its confidence and its hope for the future in question, Arizona State needed to win a football game, no matter if someone autographed it or not.
They did it in grand fashion Saturday evening, upsetting sixth-ranked Oregon, 31-28. It was a shocking result, and in the immediate minutes afterward, few people at Sun Devil Stadium seemed unsure exactly how to handle the good fortune.
Students hesitated in rushing the field. Security guards were conflicted in deciding whether to stop them. Among the few who seemed comfortable were the stadium crew that immediately triggered a mechanism that lowered the goalposts, and ASU freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels, who hugged his mom, kissed his girlfriend and went into the crowd, instead of waiting for the crowd to come to him.
