Hockey started out as something to do for Dominic Garcia. Growing up in Las Vegas, soccer and baseball were the sports most kids were playing. However, Garcia's lack of excitement for the popular sports drew him elsewhere.
Eventually he picked up roller hockey and fell in love with the sport. Hockey quickly became a passion for Garcia, but as quick as he got involved with the game, he noticed that he was being singled out for his race.
In response to the protests across the country in reaction to the death of George Floyd, Garcia, an alternate captain for the Arizona State's men's ice hockey team, released a statement on the school's athletics website describing his experience as a Black hockey player and calling for people to listen and educate themselves.
