ASU survives UTSA with late spark

SAN ANTONIO – The coaches stood outside the visitors’ locker room late Friday night, waiting as the Arizona State football team made its way off the Alamodome field.

“That’s the way to keep playing,” offensive line coach Chris Thomsen said as the Sun Devils approached the locker room.

“Battle-tested,” tight ends coach DelVaughn Alexander said.

Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey hugged nearly everyone who passed, first receivers coach Jay Norvell, then ASU Vice President of Athletics Ray Anderson.

Finally, senior defensive back Laiu Moeakiola summed up the night with two numbers:

“3-0,” he said.

The scene was one of relief, possibly escape.
