Arizona State basketball coach Bobby Hurley is in need of a post player and was hoping to land Valparaiso transfer Derrik Smits to fill that void.
But Smits, son of former NBA All-Star Rik Smits, has chosen to stay closer to home and attend Butler instead. The 7-footer had previously narrowed his decision to Butler, North Carolina State and ASU and took visits to all three.
He liked the amenities of the other schools but chose Butler, which is just 10 miles from the Smits' home in Zionsville, Ind.
