ASU hires Phil Bennett as defensive coordinator

Phil Bennett, a former head coach and defensive coordinator at eight colleges, is Arizona State's new defensive coordinator.

Bennett will replace Keith Patterson, who is remaining on head coach Todd Graham's staff as linebackers coach. He has been Baylor defensive coordinator since 2011 and was SMU head coach from 2002-07. Graham's 2007 Tulsa team beat SMU under Bennett 29-23.

Bennett's other defensive coordinator jobs were at Iowa State (1984-86), Purdue (1987-90), LSU (1994), Texas A&M (1995-96), TCU (1997), Kansas State (1999-2001) and Pittsburgh (2007-10).

Bennett is the second new addition to Graham's staff. Rob Likens, former Kansas offensive coordinator, was hired to coach wide receivers last month.
