TEMPE—Sun Devil Athletics saw a department record 53 student-athletes named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars for 2016, the organization announced in the April issue of Diverse: Issues In Higher Education.
Sun Devil football earned seven honorees, as did the combined efforts of Sun Devil volleyball & beach volleyball. The women’s soccer team followed with six total honorees.
Football’s Nick Kelly, named to the Third Team, was also the only male semifinalist for the Arthur Ashe Jr. award from a Pac-12 institution.
A total of 31 student-athletes were named to the First Team for their respective sports, led by four members of the men’s swimming and diving teams: Richard Bohus, Heikki Makikallio, Bandon Mills, and Sean Kao.
