Andrew Walter was a backpack away from transferring from Arizona State.
It was spring 2002. Walter, going into his sophomore year, and his parents were in a meeting with then-ASU football coach Dirk Koetter and quarterbacks coach Mark Helfrich.
"I was done," Walter said. "Chad (Christensen) was younger than me. He would be the guy and I would never get a chance. I had an empty backpack between my feet. I was going to leave and clean out my locker."
Koetter, then doubling as offensive coordinator, was convincing enough for Walter to stay for another season.
