Arizona State is honoring fallen soldier and former player Pat Tillman on Thursday with new uniforms as part of the school’s weeklong “Salute to Service.”
A former Sun Devil himself, Tillman was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 1998 but later turned down a contract extension offer from them in 2002 to enlist in the U.S. Army following the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001. Tillman was killed in action by friendly fire in 2004.
While at ASU, Tillman helped lead the team to an undefeated regular season in 1996 and an appearance in the Rose Bowl. The PT-42 uniforms ASU is wearing Thursday versus Oregon are modeled after the 1996 team and were designed in collaboration with Tillman’s family.
