EUGENE, Oregon - Arizona State track and field's homegrown talent led the way on day one of the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field. Tucson, Arizona native Turner Washington finished second in the shot put, and freshman Dayton Carlson from Gilbert, Arizona nearly set a program record en route to qualifying for Friday's 800m final. Washington's silver medal was the fifth medal of his career, and Carlson's 1:47.45 was a personal best and :0.5 away from Pete Richardson's 1984 1:46.95 program record. Washington is once again a first team All-American, and Carlson can reach All-American First-Team honors with an eighth place or better finish in the finals.
