Coming into the season, the Diamondbacks had both Chris Owings and Nick Ahmed as the top shortstops in the organization. If needed, they also had Ketel Marte, Jack Reinheimer, Domingo Leyba, and Ildemaro Vargas on the 40-man roster in case they needed help. Unfortunately a borderline unprecedented series of events in the last 5 weeks have completely depleted the organization's middle infield depth, particularly at the shortstop position. Injuries and family-related deaths will leave the Diamondbacks dangerously thin at the position for at least a week.
Owings and Ahmed will miss significant time due to fractured bones in their hand after getting hit by a pitch by a Cardinals pitcher.
