Torey Lovullo says he purposely kept Zack Godley in the dark about 'opening' start

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he deliberately did not tell right-hander Zack Godley that he would be making an abbreviated start on Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.

Godley pitched just one time through the batting order and lasted two innings, which Lovullo said later was “by design." Revisiting the topic on Monday, Lovullo said he made a “conscious decision” to leave out the details.

Godley said Lovullo called him following Saturday’s game to tell him he was starting on Sunday, but Lovullo apparently did not go much deeper than that.

“It was not a communication breakdown; it was something that I consciously chose to do,” Lovullo said.
