Complaining about umpiring and a given umpire’s strike zone is one of my favorite tropes of baseball fans. It undergirds so much of what I love about baseball: the capriciousness that is inherent to the sport; the pace of the game being slow enough to allow fans to follow along so closely; and how the minutiae of the sport - like the difference between a 1-1 and 0-2 count - can impact the outcome of a given game. Moreover, for a sport with the kind of longevity and history as baseball, it’s comforting to me that there are still so many similarities and ties to the sport’s origins including umpiring and calling balls and strikes.
