At the start of last week, the Diamondbacks had a serious shot at the second or third pick in next year's draft. They had just dropped the series in Baltimore and sat at 64-91. That gave them sole possession of the third-worst record in the majors, just a game better than the second-worst Atlanta Braves. But a split of the four contests in Washington and a sweep of the San Diego Padres gave Arizona a 5-2 record over the final week, and allowed them to pass not just the Padres, but also the Rays and Reds in the standings.
