The Diamondbacks’ roster began taking shape on Sunday with the announcement that Taylor Widener had claimed a spot in the starting rotation, taking the place of the injured Zac Gallen.
Widener will start the fourth game of the season this Sunday at Petco Park, following left-hander Madison Bumgarner, right-hander Merrill Kelly and lefty Caleb Smith to the mound against the San Diego Padres. Right-hander Luke Weaver will slot in as the fifth starter and will make his first start on April 6 in Colorado.
Widener got the edge over right-hander Taylor Clarke, both of whom posted good results in Cactus League play.
