Stewart: Padres asked for Goldschmidt in trade

HOUSTON – Though he was inactive at the trade deadline, Diamondbacks General Manager Dave Stewart made waves Friday afternoon when he described what would be a preposterous trade request made by a rival team before softening his statements in a subsequent interview.

Stewart, whose team did not complete a trade prior to the deadline, said on KTAR-AM (620) that the San Diego Padres asked for first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in a possible trade for closer Craig Kimbrel.

On the radio, he said the Diamondbacks “did not get a very positive response” from the Padres in their attempts to acquire Kimbrel, an All-Star closer.
