The Diamondbacks lost their most accomplished reliever to the injured list on Tuesday as right-hander Joakim Soria was diagnosed with a left calf strain, further clouding a bullpen picture that manager Torey Lovullo had left intentionally hazy to start the season.
Soria suffered the injury while covering first base in Sunday’s game in San Diego. He underwent an MRI exam on Phoenix, which confirmed the club’s initial diagnosis of a strain. The Diamondbacks are expecting him to miss at least a couple of weeks.
Lovullo entered the season without outlining traditional bullpen roles, instead saying he preferred to play matchups throughout the late innings.
