Do we have a closer problem?
Justin: Personally, I do not think so. Sewald was very good before the two recent blown saves. I think it gets magnified since one of them was against FTD.
Preston: Is there ever not a closer problem? But yes, I think we do. Sewald’s fastball is in the 11th percentile for velocity. There’s no margin of error in the ninth inning of a one-run game; do we really want the guy there to be relying on smoke and mirrors? Sewald’s success has come from doing exactly what closers shouldn’t be doing: he pitches to weak contact.
