SAN DIEGO – Paul Goldschmidt was given Monday night off, but the Diamondbacks first baseman said he treated it like a normal day, taking batting practice and preparing as if he were in the starting lineup.
Goldschmidt rarely acknowledges to reporters the need for a day off, so there’s no telling if the downtime played a part in what happened on Tuesday night, when he connected for his first home run in nearly a month, a two-run shot in the Diamondbacks’ 5-2 loss to the San Diego Padres.
“Hopefully, I would have done the same thing,” he said when asked if the day off factored into the homer.
