The Randy Johnson who arrived in Arizona in 1999, fearsome and scowling and dominant, was a finished product. The Diamondbacks plucked him off the free-agent shelf and plugged him into their rotation, watching him win four Cy Young awards, lead them to a World Series title and chart his course to Cooperstown, N.Y., where he’ll be inducted Sunday into baseball's Hall of Fame.
But what Diamondbacks fans missed was a transformation as incredible as it was historic.
