PHOENIX -- Cubs manager Joe Maddon has said repeatedly that his team needed to find ways to score runs without just relying on the long ball, and Friday night they heeded his call in an 8-3 win over the D-backs at Chase Field.
Chicago took advantage of a rocky first inning by D-backs starter Taijuan Walker to draw a pair of walks and score two runs despite hitting just one ball out of the infield. The Cubs added a run in the second, thanks in part to a hit by pitch, to stake John Lackey (10-9) to a 3-0 lead.
