Editors' note: ESPN reporter Pedro Gomez, who died Sunday at the age of 58, was a columnist for the Arizona Republic from 1997-2003, when he left to join the national cable sports network. Gomez, among the most respected Major League Baseball reporters in the country, wrote on a variety of topics for the Republic, but his focus often circled back to baseball. Below, is a column he wrote for the Republic about former Diamondbacks' pitcher Curt Schilling.
