Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed was playing through hip pain for a while this season.
When he was shut down in late July, the severity was apparent but the surgery that will keep him in rehabilitation until late January makes it even clearer.
Ahmed, 26, not only had his right labrum repaired and reattached but underwent a microfracture procedure, the type of operation more commonly associated with repairing athletes’ knees.
