Miller’s freak injury rocks D-Backs' staff

SAN DIEGO – No one had ever seen anything quite like what happened to Diamondbacks right-hander Shelby Miller on Saturday night, and that includes Miller himself. On a pitch in the second inning, Miller followed through on his delivery and whacked his hand on the Petco Park mound. A few pitches later, he did it again, and soon after he was out of the game.

This wasn’t a sidearming pitcher a la Chad Bradford trying to throw from a crazy angle. It was a pitcher with a traditional delivery who managed to hurt himself in an untraditional manner, an injury that sent shockwaves through the Diamondbacks pitching staff on Saturday night and likely will be cause for a series of moves in the coming days.
