The Diamondbacks surprised many with the hiring of Mike Hazen as their next general manager. In this case, there is no middle man between the GM and ownership like with Tony La Russa and Dave Stewart, Hazen is in charge of everything. Hazen comes from the analytics-heavy Red Sox organization and one of the few holdovers from the very successful Theo Epstein regime that netted the Sox two World Series titles in four years. Hazen was the Red Sox interim GM when Ben Cherington was fired in 2015, and stayed when they hired Dave Dombrowski to be the top executive.
