Believe it or not, the first live sporting event I ever covered for The Arizona Republic happened to be a no-hitter.
It was a first-round playoff game in the AIA state baseball tournament and I remember hustling to get quotes and reactions from everyone I could, even the pitcher’s parents and his girlfriend.
I organized my thoughts as I ran to the pay phone, preparing to dictate the story to my editor. My heart was pumping as I waited for him to answer. Then it sank to my feet when he told me what I could do with my story.
