CHICAGO – The Diamondbacks did the near impossible on Sunday, becoming the first team to beat Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta in nearly a year. For their next trick, they’ll try to do something that’s been accomplished only a handful of times in modern baseball history.
Their 3-2 win at Wrigley Field pulled the Diamondbacks to 25-34 on the season, a record that, historically speaking, leaves them with remarkably long odds if they hope to make the playoffs.
Since 1903, only four teams have had that bad of a record through 59 games and still managed to reach the postseason.
