The Diamondbacks clubhouse was unusually quiet on Tuesday afternoon. There wasn’t much conversation going on between players. There was no pregame music on the stereo. Even the 7-foot basketball hoop was shelved to a far side of the room like a deserted toy.
Maybe it’s because the team was coming off a disappointing 2-4 trip in Washington and Colorado. Perhaps it’s because they had fallen to third place in the National League West. It could have been, too, that they simply were tired and beat.
Whatever it was, the mood seemed like the perfect setting for left-hander Robbie Ray.
