Hale in tough spot with Lamb, Peralta

Bottom of the seventh inning in Arizona’s 6-4 loss to Tampa Bay on Monday:

A Phil Gosselin single and a Paul Goldschmidt hit-by-pitch put runners on first and second with two outs. The Rays brought in left-hander Enny Romero to pitch to third baseman Jake Lamb.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale played the percentages. Lamb was hitting .135 against left-handers this season. He sat Lamb down and called for right-handed pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks Jr., who walked to keep the rally going.

Two batters later, with the bases loaded, it was David Peralta’s turn to face Romero. Again, Hale went by the book.
