The Marlins rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, but the Diamondbacks managed to avoid further damage thanks to a generous – and questionable – called third strike by home plate umpire Kerwin Danley.
With the bases loaded, two out and a run already in, the Marlins’ J.T. Riddle was rung up by Danley on a pitch that appeared to be well above the strike zone.
The Marlins, though, tied the game at 5 earlier in the inning. Giancarlo Stanton smoked a double into the right-center field gap – a ball that left his bat at a scalding 114 mph – and moved to third on a fly out to right.
