As a matter of self-protection, I like to tell myself before a doubleheader that it’s rare for a team to sweep a doubleheader. This mantra gives me comfort that if my team loses the opener, they’re more likely to win the nightcap and it’s a nice reminder that if they win the opener and lose the nightcap, it was unlikely to happen anyway. That goes doubly so for a doubleheader that wraps a series and a possible sweep. It’s difficult enough sweeping a series, let alone doing it on the road and against one of the top teams in the majors.
