As Game 3 was on the horizon, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo had already made the decision: Brandon Pfaadt would not face the Phillies lineup a third time around.
But what Lovullo did not envision was Brandon Pfaadt setting a new career high in strikeouts (9) and only allowing two hits through 5.2 innings.
And he did so against a Phillies offense that scored 10 runs two days earlier and is well on its way to breaking a postseason home run record.
Nonetheless, Torey Lovullo, with two outs in the 5th inning, took the slow walk to the mound to grab the baseball out of Pfaadt’s hand.
