Diamondbacks officials said this week they expect to have a 2017 payroll in the same range of what they had this season – i.e., around $100 million – a total that would leave them with relatively little wiggle room if the current roster remains in place.
As it stands, the Diamondbacks have only four players under contract for 2017: right-hander Zack Greinke, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, center fielder A.J. Pollock and outfielder Yasmany Tomas. The four total around $60 million in salary.
But when arbitration-eligible players enter the picture, the budget looks far less flexible.
