Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo still blames himself for the back injury that brought an early end to Ketel Marte’s season in September, and he pledged on Tuesday to get his star second baseman more days off this season.
Of course, taking a team’s best hitter out of the lineup is easier said than done, something Marte jokingly acknowledged when asked how much rest he expects to receive this season.
“I’m not going to have days off,” he said, “if I have three hits the day before.”
For now, at least, Lovullo is claiming otherwise.
“I’m going to work hard to get him days off, no doubt about it,” Lovullo said.
