Johan Maya, a Diamondbacks scout based in the Dominican Republic, died Thursday morning of COVID-19. He was 40.
Maya joined the Diamondbacks in 2018 after spending the previous 15 years in the Houston Astros organization.
Maya’s health declined quickly, happening over just a matter of days, Diamondbacks General Manager Mike Hazen said. He was admitted to the hospital last weekend, put on a ventilator in the middle of the week and died on Thursday morning.
He is survived by his wife, Edulig, and three children. His wife is expecting another child later this year.
“This disease, this virus that we’ve spent a lot of time talking about, it comes in many forms and fashions,” Hazen said.
