Two of the top three vote-getters for the National League MVP award are off to rough starts to the 2018 season.
Both New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton and Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt entered play Tuesday boasting sub-.200 batting averages and have more strikeouts than hits.
The struggles seem to be more significant for Stanton, who is in his first season with the Yankees after winning the NL MVP with the Miami Marlins last season.
Stanton went 0 for 7 with five strikeouts on Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles and became the first player in the live-ball era to whiff five times and register no hits in multiple games in a season.
