The Diamondbacks are expected to welcome Matt Williams back to the organization on Wednesday when he’s officially announced as the club’s new third-base coach. The team is also expected to name Garvin Alston the bullpen coach.
But the club learned this week it will have yet another opening on the coaching staff with the unexpected departure of hitting coach Turner Ward. Manager Chip Hale said Ward told him on Monday night he would not return next season and was pursing other opportunities in the game.
A member of the inaugural 1998 team, Williams helped the Diamondbacks win the World Series in 2001.
