ATLANTA – The chalk baseline on an infield starts in back of third base and stops before reaching home plate, giving way to the batter’s box. But the foul line continues toward the plate, invisibly and open to interpretation, and the way Patrick Corbin saw things in the third inning on Sunday afternoon, there was no doubt as to which side of this imaginary line his bunted ball was on.
“That’s why I didn’t even move,” Corbin said, “because I thought it was foul, for sure.”
Home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi did not agree, and Corbin’s decision not to immediately run to first allowed the Atlanta Braves to easily turn a double play, a moment that wound up being critical in the Diamondbacks’ 5-1 loss at SunTrust Park.
