Diamondbacks lose out on J.D. Martinez, but sign OF Jarrod Dyson

The Diamondbacks’ long-shot hopes at re-signing slugger J.D. Martinez were extinguished on Monday afternoon, but they already had a deal in place to land another outfielder with a completely different, yet still useful, skillset.

Only hours after the Diamondbacks learned Martinez had agreed to terms on a nine-figure deal with the Boston Red Sox, reports surfaced that they had a two-year, $7.5 million agreement in place with free-agent outfielder Jarrod Dyson.

Dyson, 33, gives the Diamondbacks a strong defender at all three outfield positions; a capable option against right-handed pitching; and a player who can provide value as a baserunner and basestealer.
