In three days against one of baseball’s worst pitching staffs, the Diamondbacks’ offense returned to the land of the living. Their hitters did not dismantle the Cincinnati Reds in each game. But at least they looked capable. And given what the previous few weeks have been like, even a modest transformation such as this is cause for celebration.
Now they just have to do all the other things necessary to win a baseball game. They couldn’t on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Reds 7-4 in a loss that cost them a series sweep. They led 4-0 after three innings, but the Reds slammed a pair of home runs in the middle innings off Patrick Corbin – a grand slam and a two-run shot – to storm ahead for good.
