LOS ANGELES – For the second night in a row, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo turned to lefty Andrew Chafin on Thursday night to start the ninth inning in a close game, matching him up with a left-handed hitter before turning the game over to closer Brad Boxberger.
Both times, it worked out perfectly, with Chafin striking out the only batter he faced and Boxberger striking out the next two.
For Lovullo, this sort of tandem closer situation is another example of him changing the way he manages games in order to get every win possible.
“This is go time,” Lovullo said.
