When the Diamondbacks gave Ketel Marte a contract extension prior to last season, their thinking was fairly straightforward: He was talented, athletic and could play up the middle. He was a switch-hitter with a sound approach. And he had exhibited a good work ethic and demonstrated the ability to improve.
All that aside, there was another important consideration: timing. The deal they gave him – five years, $24 million, plus two team options – was one they weren’t sure would be available to them the following year.
A little less than a season and a half later, Marte, 25, is in the midst of a breakout year.
