After right-hander Merrill Kelly loaded the bases in the sixth inning, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo turned to right-hander Yoshihisa Hirano to inherit three runners in one-run game and one out.
Although Hirano hadn’t permitted an inherited runner to score since April 3, the sophomore reliever had allowed four runs over his previous four outings — part of a Diamondbacks bullpen that had been springing leaks over the current homestand.
“I just felt it was a good match-up (with) a lot of the information I had sitting in front of me,” Lovullo said of the decision to insert Hirano in the sixth.
